A unique seaside cottage, set in 7 acres of uspoilt countryside, just a stones throw from Monk's Bay
Full of character, Carmel was once the head gardener’s cottage to the impressive East Dene Estate – home in Victorian times to the celebrated poet Algernon Swinburne. The cottage faces due south with spectacular seaviews from both the property and its surrounding garden. Climb the paths behind the house to reveal further secluded terraces with panoramic sea views.
Carmel has been furnished in a modern style to compliment many of its original features, hand carved fireplaces, Gothic style windows and airy open vaulted ceilings. For 2013 we have installed a new kitchen and renovated the original floorboards in the lounge and dining room (photos to follow shortly).
STYLE AND ROOMS
The Cottage has three elegantly furnished bedrooms, each with its own unique charm, and easily sleeping eight.
Upstairs, 2 large double bedrooms overlook the surrounding countryside with seaviews to the east and west. Vaulted ceilings and open beams compliment the sunny light mood of the rooms and hallway. The childrens room has three single beds with an optional pull out if further sleeping is required. The bathroom is also spacious and provides bath, shower, wc and wash basin.
The third bedroom is located towards the rear of the property overlooking the garden. Stripped floorboards, minister style stone fireplace and tongue and groove paneling all enhance the open, airy atmosphere. This room has an en suite shower-room accessible through the adjacent utility room.
Should you require additional sleeping, the corner suite in the lounge can be converted into a sofa bed and the lounge shut off from the hallway. Cosy in the winter with the woodburner or refreshing in the summer with the garden doors open letting the summer breeze fill the room.
Relax in the terrace gardens and enjoy the gentle sound and smell of the ocean
Our ever evolving gardens fit perfectly between the charming nature of the cottage and their magical setting between sea, sky and nature.
The lower gardens surrounding the property are a great place for children to explore and play in the wendy house. Numerous eating areas and terraces enable you to enjoy a spectacular seaview and absorb the sun from early in the morning well into the evening. Our new look out deck at the top of the upper garden has incredible views looking out over the gardens, across the cliff and out to sea.
Stunning. Carmel is set down a private lane on the south coast of the Isle of Wight. The Undercliff is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is famous for its unique microclimate, offering year round temperatures milder than anywhere else in the UK.
Follow the path down the cliff to Monks Bay, a beautiful sheltered sandy beach, safe for bathing. The offshore breakwater to the west is the perfect place to cast a fishing line out to sea. At low tide hundreds of rock-pools are exposed, home to many small fish, prawns and crabs. When the tide comes in float over the rocks with a mask and snorkel – you will be amazed at what you see.
Explore the wooded area to the east of Carmel known as The Landslip. As with the rest of the Undercliff, the Landslip has been sculpted over the last 10 000 years by erosion and landslides giving rise to a distinctive landscape onto itself. The unique coastal path will lead you from rugged cliff top through enchanting woodland and open glades with views far out to sea. Climb the steps cut into the cliffs known as ‘The Devils Chimney’ where smugglers stashed their hauls from wrecked ships hundreds of years ago
